Leave Nothing to Chance: Understanding Spiritual Warfare in Daily Life
In a world where unexpected challenges can arise at any moment, many believers find themselves wondering why difficult circumstances seem to happen randomly. The truth is, not everything that occurs in our lives is simply "chance" or "just life happening." There's a deeper spiritual reality at work that requires our attention and understanding.
What Does "Time and Chance" Really Mean?
Ecclesiastes 9:11-12 tells us that "the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favor to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all" (NKJV). At first glance, this might suggest that life is simply random. However, this interpretation can lead to a dangerous passivity in our spiritual walk.
When we accept that everything is just "chance," we risk leaving ourselves vulnerable to spiritual attacks and missing God's plan for our lives. Some things happen naturally, but we must also recognize and address spiritual forces at work.
Three Types of Works Operating in Our Lives
To understand what's really happening around us, we need to distinguish between three different types of works:
The Works of the Devil
According to 1 John 3:8, "For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil" (NKJV). The works of the devil include sin, sickness, disease, and death. These are not from God, and they are not random occurrences we must simply accept.
The Works of the Flesh
The works of the flesh, found in Galatians 5:16-19, stem from our undisciplined nature and carnal desires. These are issues we can address through spiritual discipline and growth.
The Works of God
God's work is to restore humanity to a right relationship with Him, just as Adam walked with God in the cool of the day before sin entered the world.
Why We Can't Leave Things to Chance
Satan Has a Strategy
The enemy is not random in his attacks. According to 2 Corinthians 2:11, we should not be "ignorant of his devices" (NKJV). Satan is a strategist who studies our patterns, our weaknesses, and our relationships. He assigns forces to watch and wait for opportunities to gain advantage over us.
The Danger of Spiritual Ignorance
The word "ignorant" in Greek means to be unlearned or uneducated. When we remain spiritually uneducated about the enemy's tactics, we become vulnerable targets. This ignorance is actually the foundation of agnosticism—not knowing what to believe.
God Is Not in Control of Everything
The idea may sound shocking, but if God controlled every detail of life, there would be no sickness, no evil, no premature death, and no suffering. God has given humanity authority over earthly affairs. While He is sovereign, He has chosen to work through willing vessels who partner with Him in prayer and obedience.
How to Exercise Your Spiritual Senses
Hebrews 5:14 speaks of those "who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil" (NKJV). Just as we have five physical senses, we also have spiritual senses that need development.
Moving from Milk to Meat
Spiritual maturity requires moving beyond basic teachings to deeper understanding. When we remain on "spiritual milk," we stay vulnerable to deception and manipulation. Mature believers can discern between the following: - What comes from God - What comes from the enemy - What comes from our own flesh
Practical Steps to Leave Nothing to Chance
Start Your Day with God
Don't leave your house without engaging with Christ. Command your morning, declare God's blessing, and establish your relationship with Him before facing the day.
Study and Apply God's Word
The Word of God is described as a lamp to our feet and a light to our path (Psalm 119:105). It's also our primary weapon against spiritual attacks—"the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God" (Ephesians 6:17 NKJV).
Put on the Full Armor of God
Ephesians 6 instructs us to wear the following: - The helmet of salvation (protecting our minds) - The breastplate of righteousness (protecting our hearts) - The shield of faith (quenching fiery darts) - The sword of the Spirit (our offensive weapon)
Develop Spiritual Discernment
Learn to recognize when the enemy is operating versus when it's a flesh issue or God's leading. This comes through consistent study, prayer, and spiritual exercise.
The Power of Redemption
Remember that you have been redeemed by the blood of Jesus. Ephesians 1:7 says, "In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace" (NKJV). This redemption grants you authority over the enemy's schemes.
You are not fighting for victory; you're fighting from victory. Christ has already defeated the enemy at the cross. Your job is to enforce that victory in your daily life through prayer, the Word, and spiritual vigilance.
Life Application
This week, commit to being thorough in your spiritual life. Begin each day with intentional prayer and Bible reading before checking your phone or starting your routine. When challenges arise, pause and ask, "Is this a spiritual attack, a flesh issue, or God's leading?" Then respond accordingly with prayer, repentance, or obedience.
Questions for Reflection:
What areas of my life have I been leaving to "chance" instead of bringing them to God in prayer?
How can I better exercise my spiritual senses to discern what's really happening around me?
What specific steps will I take this week to start my days with intentional spiritual preparation?
The enemy wants you to believe that you're powerless against life's circumstances. But the truth is, you have been given authority through Christ to stand against spiritual attacks and walk in victory. Don't leave anything to chance; take your position as a child of God and enforce the victory that Jesus has already won for you.
